“Karookop is a lovely project we fund that gives back to the community,” says David Nieuwoudt. “Clanwilliam is the ‘hometown’ of the Cederberg and close to our hearts.”
It is in that town, 60 km away from Dwarsrivier farm, David went to school from 1979 to 1990. The school has an agricultural aspect and boasts its own chardonnay and pinotage vineyards – but the learners don’t just farm the vineyard.
“That’s why, as a wine cellar and brand, we got involved – to show the learners the whole process from vineyard to wine. Once a year, they visit us. They are so proud of their wine and are one of only a few schools in the country that has its own label.
“Karookop is the name of the koppie behind the school, so it’s a well-known landmark in Clanwilliam,” explains David. “We make the wine for them and our viticulturist, Dirk de Bruyn, is also very involved in pruning and training at the school.
“We serve the wine at functions. Karookop is also available at local restaurants and for purchase in Clanwilliam.” David concludes.
